Retreat Selous

Once discovered, that magical “Passion for Africa” takes hold, so much so in our case that we decided to source the most remote corner of this vast untouched wilderness and establish our “outpost” in form of “The Retreat”.

The Retreat, located in Northern Selous, is a twelve-suite exquisite hideaway that offers complete seclusion in the heart of remote bush lands. The Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected wildlife sanctuary in Africa and is widely accredited as being the most pristine wilderness and one of the “secrets of Africa”.

Elephants, lions, black rhinos, leopards, wild dogs, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles and more than 400 different birds can be seen among many other wildlife. Guests at The Retreat are invited to share a rare intact ecosystem of Africa which is perfectly untouched and can be explored in many different ways.

Sand River Camp

Life at Sand Rivers is relaxed and while you’re with us we’ll work with you to plan your days as you go. This is an area we know and love, and it matters to us that you get to see the best of it.

But many of our guests quickly realise that a few hours spent relaxing on the verandahs of their open-fronted rooms, or cooling off in the pool, surrounded by Kingfishers and Bee Eaters, listening to the grunts of hippos on the river, can be time equally well spent.

We designed our 8 open-fronted rooms here for maximum comfort – wonderful beds, plenty of space and probably the best showers you’ll have come across for a while – but we didn’t want to lose that connection with the African bush which has so inspired us.

Which is why each room has panoramic views out over the river, why we go to great trouble to make sure that the only noises you hear are those of the wildlife and why we took particular care to make the most of the natural light, space and cooling breeze that comes off in the water.

Amara Luxury Tented Camp

Nestled along the great Ruaha river lies a hidden gem, the Simbazi Selous, a luxury boutique camp in the heart of the Selous wilderness. The Amara experience is designed to suit every traveler. Providing guests with lavish comfort in the middle of the African bush, Amara merges nature with extravagance for the best of both worlds.

Situated in the heart of Southern Tanzania’s Selous Game Reserve, Amara brings a whole new meaning to luxury accommodation in the heart of the African bush. Great effort has been made to ensure that Amara reflects the colours and mood of the Selous, balancing it with its wild and unblemished environment.

This ultra luxury Selous property offers 12 suites each with 90 square meters of inside space and an additional 40 meters of outdoor space. Supreme relaxation on king beds whilst cooling in air-conditioned luxury is coupled with complete and opulent bathrooms.

Additionally attached are secluded outside showers with hot water and inviting rock plunge pools, where you can safely relax and cool down under the African sun to the snorts and antics of the resident hippos – nearby in the river.

For work or reflection, an internationally adaptable desk overlooks the sprawling river. Selous  Luxury Camp

Set amidst dense indigenous forests the Selous Luxury Camp is the ultimate wilderness retreat. With 360-degree views over the surrounding bush, the twelve widely spaced tents are presented in time-honoured safari style, with natural thatch roofs, elegant Victorian-styled bathrooms, private viewing decks. Luxuriously presented, each tent features an engaging mix of canvas walls, crystal chandeliers, opulent rugs and elegant rosewood furniture.

Deep within the wilderness, the charming central dining room, lounge, library and bar, which are interconnected by broad wooden walkways offering excellent views of the Selous Game Reserve. High above the lodge, is a spectacular ‘infinity’ pool and sundeck.

Vast, pristine and largely undiscovered, the spectacular Selous Game Reserve is a World Heritage Site and the largest expanse of game reserve in Africa. Covering 55,000 square kilometres of rolling savannah, lakes, rivers and deltas, it is four times the size of the Serengeti and larger than the entire nation of Switzerland. Home to the largest concentrations of elephants in the world, this unique wildlife arena also boasts some of the most exclusive and pioneering boating safaris that Africa has to offer.

Getting there

The Camp is in the Selous National Reserve, which is 45 minute’s flight from Dar es Salaam International Airport. A meet and greet service is offered from Stiegler’s Airstrip, which is just a half-hour’s game drive away from the camp.
