Ndarakwai Luxury Tented lodge

Ndarakwai Camp is a permanent tented lodge on Ndarakwai Ranch. With views of both Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru, the camp is nestled in a protected forest of towering fig, and yellow-barked acacias that line the seasonal Ngare Nairobi River (North).

Facilities include 15 spacious en suite tents with thatched roofs, a large dining / bar / lounge area next to the river, and a spacious pavilion for meetings, workshops, yoga, etc.

Catering to a maximum of just 30 guests, Ndarakwai Camp offers an intimate relaxed atmosphere where your every need is catered to. Mealtimes are flexible and can be arranged with your guide and the camp Managers. Picnic lunches, bush breakfasts, and a bush campfire & bar are easily arranged. In the evening guests can gather around either of 2 indoor fireplaces, or an outdoor campfire for snacks and sundowners. Welcome the African night, elephants that ghost past camp, bushbuck outside your tents, and the haunting cries of bush babies in the trees.

Guests can relax in camp during the day, or take in the variety of wildlife and cultural activities that are on offer. Our main activities are guided full or half day walks (where the emphasis can either be on game or bird watching), game drives, and night game drives. You can also visit local Maasai villages to photograph and buy authentic beaded jewelry. The ‘tree house’ where you can watch game at the waterhole, is an activity in itself with an ever changing wildlife cast.

Day trips to Arusha National Park, and into Kilimanjaro National Park, or the Forest Reserve, are also easily arranged.

We provide hot showers in camp at any time of day, but try to keep our water impact as low as possible. Most of the drinking water used in camp, and for all of our ice, is made from Kilimanjaro water filtered and purified on site. Shower water is heated with twigs and camp waste in fuel- efficient boilers.Meals are prepared on propane stoves and insulated clay ovens. Candlelight and kerosene lanterns provide romantic evening light. All Camp electricity is derived from solar panels – with a rare occasional top up by generator.

We pay close attention to our impact on neighboring communities. Ndarakwai Camp was built by, and is staffed by people from the local villages. Materials, such as canvas for tents, poles for construction, and grass for thatching, were obtained locally, and all of the tents were made onsite.

We grow most of our own vegetables or buy from neighboring farms. Trees felled by elephants provide all of our firewood. The camps unique open design grew out of the available, sustainably supplied local raw materials and the skills of craftsmen that live in the area.

We recognize this form of eco-tourism as a viable, sustainable and pro-active means of balancing the needs of wildlife, local communities, and the environment.

We recommend a minimum stay of at least 2 – 3 nights, and many guests enjoy stays of 4 + nights.

Visit this unique camp to share an intimate and personal experience with Tanzania’s people, landscape, and wildlife. You will leave knowing that you have contributed to the preservation of this unique habitat.
